MIDTOWN — A woman was raped this morning in the vicinity of the Lincoln Tunnel, and Port Authority police swiftly captured and charged her alleged attacker, according to various officials.

Joseph Johnson, 52, who sources said had 70 arrests in his criminal record, was arrested by the Port Authority Police Department after he was taken into custody in connection with an alleged rape, a spokesman said.

Johnson, who according to state records was released from jail on July 29 on a weapons charge, was facing charges of rape, menacing, criminal sexual act in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of a controlled substance after the August 3 attack, the authority spokesman said.

The incident occurred near the Lincoln Tunnel, but did not take place inside any of the buses or in the tunnel itself, sources said. The victim sought out a police officer after the attack and after speaking to the PAPD was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to the FDNY.

Soon after, the suspect was picked up by the fast-moving police officer who took her report, and detectives, who apprehended him around 7 a.m. in the massive Port Authority bus terminal at West 40th Street and Eighth Avenue, the spokesman said.
