ROCKAWAY BEACH — This might be a relief.

The modular comfort stations that have spent a few weeks in a lot far from the shore are headed to a permanent, beachside location in Arverne, the Parks Department said Monday.

The multi-million dollar bathrooms were delivered to Rockaway by barge and then brought to a lot owned by the Department of Environmental Protection on July 9.

On Monday, a Parks Department spokesman said the bathrooms will be delivered to the beach in Arverne.

"The final two modular units for the Rockaways will be installed at Beach 67th Street, just to the west of where Beach 67th Street meets the boardwalk," a Parks spokesman said.

The move comes despite the opposition of the plan by some within the community. Some homeowners from the Arverne by the Sea development fought the plan because there wasn't a public bathroom there before the storm.

Members of the local community board also said they weren't consulted on the location of the units.

“If the location is a new location, selected without any input from the community board, local civic or elected officials where there was never a bathroom before, that neighborhood will be very angry,” said Dolores Orr, a board member as well as president of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association.

The department said the location was selected based on its attraction as a surfing beach, its proximity to the A train and a newly-built shopping plaza that features a surf shop with rentals, a Subway, a pizza place, a weekly farmer's market and more.

The delivery date has not been decided, Parks said.
