HUDSON HEIGHTS — An alleged fire escape burglar has been arrested being caught in the act by police on a roof in Hudson Heights, authorities said.

Abraham Hichez was taken into custody in the early morning hours of June 13 after being spotted on the rooftop of 720 Fort Washington Ave., police said.

According to the criminal complaint, an informant called police after hearing noises on a rear fire escape. Police responded in time to see Hichez, 43, run across the roof of the building onto nearby 700 Fort Washington Ave. to evade arrest.

Police sources say Hichez then descended the fire escape and tried to escape into the trees and rocks behind the building, where he was caught after a half-hour search.

Hichez, who was charged with second degree burglary and resisting arrest, was held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 18.

Fire escape burglaries have long been an issue for the 34th Precinct, and officers have reminded residents at community meetings and through email blasts to constantly lock their doors.
