QUEENS — Just in time for summer, a new frozen yogurt place opened this week in Forest Hills.

The shop, Vanilla Sky, is the latest addition to the Restaurant Row on 70th Road, which includes a Japanese restaurant and a steakhouse.

The self-serve yogurt place offers about a dozen flavors, including vanilla, chocolate, Caribbean coffee and red velvet and there are non-fat, low-fat and sugar-free options.

Yogurt, which costs 49 cents per ounce, can be topped with a number of goodies, including nuts, fresh fruit, toasted coconut and syrups.

Vanilla Sky, which has another location in Astoria, also offers fresh Greek yogurt (55 cents an ounce).

The new shop is at least the third yogurt place in the area, joining Red Mango on Queens Boulevard and Yogomonster on Austin Street.

Maria Markoulis, manager at Vanilla Sky, said the new place is trying to set itself apart by offering items other than frozen treats.

The store sells coffee, including lattes, cappuccinos, ice coffee and mocha. It also offers smoothies and milk shakes in more than a dozen flavors, fruit salads, cookies, muffins, as well as sandwiches.

“We’d like to give people an alternative,” said Markoulis. “If someone wants to come and doesn’t want to have yogurt, they can get something else.”

The store is also expected to have a sidewalk café soon and is currently waiting for the necessary permits, Markouils said.

Customers said they like the store's design with its white and blue walls and wooden furniture.

“I think teens will love it,” said Allison Torres, 42, a waitress from Forest Hills, who has a 17-year old daughter. “It’s very modern and cool-looking.”

Torres, who said she loves frozen yogurt, was also happy to see the red velvet flavor, which she said is hard to find.
