'Mobile Spa' Selling $3K Phones to Open on Bleecker Street

GREENWICH VILLAGE — Does your $800 iPhone 5 seem a bit shabby?

A new shop set to open in the Village on Saturday may be able to solve that problem.

Specializing in Swarovski Crystal cases and "luxury" cell phones starting at $3,000, the Mobile Spa will bring posh electronics to 259 Bleecker St., owner Fawad Lakhani said Monday.

"It's going to be a very boutique-style store, very elegant," Lakhani said, as he installed shelving inside the 250-square-foot space that was formerly home to Three Monkeys Eyewear.

Lakhani, a 34-year-old Pakistan native who owns two less-opulent electronics stores on the Upper West Side, said he will stock phones by the British company Vertu, which makes custom mobiles out of materials including leather, titanium, real snakeskin and gold plating.

The shop will also sell $200 crystal phone cases in "funky" designs like leopard print, polka dots and stripes, plus top-of-the-line headphones by Bose and Beats by Dr. Dre.

On the lower end of Mobile Spa's offerings are cut-rate phone repairs, Lakhani said. The shop will charge $75 to replace a cracked screen on most models of iPhones, and most work will be done in an hour or less.

Declining to discuss how much he's paying in rent, Lakhani said the Village seemed like an ideal market for tricked-out electronics.

"There are a lot of high-end stores here," he said.
