Inwood Yoga Studio Introduces Preschoolers to Gardening and Capoeira

By Nigel Chiwaya | March 8, 2013 12:16pm

INWOOD — An Inwood yoga studio is offering kids a different take on preschool — one that swaps free play and circle time for gardening and capoeira.

"Too Cool 4 Preschool" is a collaboration between Inwood's Bread and Yoga and Scribble Art Workshop, a New-Jersey based program that aims to provide young children access to the arts.

Capoeira, a Brazilian style of martial arts, and gardening are just some of the activities children ages 3 to 4 participate in. The 10-week program also offers music and "scribble" — art, painting and collage — sessions.

Bread and Yoga founder Marcela Xavier said that the program was designed for families that either couldn't get into a pre-K program or were looking for something different.

"There's a lot of time in pre-K where kids are playing," Xavier said. "That's not what we're offering."

Xavier said that the classes, which she described as "very structured," are designed to introduce children to as many new experiences as possible in a short period of time.

"Instead of taking your kid to a million different classes during the week you can drop them off for one morning and they get art, music, gardening," Xavier said.

Bread and Yoga will host an open house on March 19, at which parents can test out a 30-minute version of the scribble, music and capoeira programs for $20.

"Too Cool 4 Preschool" has eight seats. For more information parents can visit www.breadandyoga.com.
