Bloomberg Now 13th Richest Man on Earth, Forbes Says

By Jill Colvin | March 4, 2013 3:42pm

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Michael Bloomberg is now the 13th richest man on earth, according to Forbes magazine.

The publication's 2013's Top 20 Billionaires ranking, which was released Monday, estimates Hizzoner's net worth at $27 billion — up $5 billion from his $22 billion last year, which then landed him in the 20th slot.

"The King of New York — and the 13th-richest man in the world — rules over multiple spheres of influence: politics, media and philanthropy," the magazine wrote. "The mayor has one year left in his third and supposedly final term, but no one expects him to disappear after leaving office."

The No. 1 slot once again belongs to Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim, whose wealth the magazine pegged at $73 billion.

Microsoft's Bill Gates came in second at $67 billion, with Zara's Amancio Ortega, investor Warren Buffett and Oracle's Larry Ellison rounding up the top five.

The Koch brothers, Charles and David, came in sixth and seventh, with David once again named the city's richest resident. His fortune was up an estimated $9 billion from last year, and now stands at $34 billion, the magazine said.
