UPPER EAST SIDE — Progress continues on the Second Avenue subway project, as the Metropolitan Transit Authority awarded a major construction contract for the future East 72nd Street station, officials announced Friday.

The MTA will pay more than $258 million to Judlau Contracting, Inc. to build the final pieces of the station, including entrances and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, the MTA said in a statement.

Entrances to the future East 72nd Street terminal will be located on the southeast corner of East 69th Street and Second Avenue and the northwest corner of East 72nd Street and Second Avenue, the MTA said. The East 72nd Street entrance will be handicapped-accessible.

This is the ninth of 10 contracts to be awarded during the first phase of Second Avenue subway construction, officials said.

The project, which costs $4.45 billion, will extend the Q train along Second Avenue and has long been billed by MTA officials as "the largest expansion of the subway system in generations."

Stations will be located at East 72nd, 86th and 96th streets, officials said.

The line is set to open in December 2016.
