NEW YORK CITY — Watch out for weather whiplash — after last week's Arctic freeze, New York City is bracing for near record high temperatures Wednesday.

The mercury is expected to climb close to 60, according to Accuweather. It was already close to 50 on Tuesday.

Warm winds heading north "will raise temperatures well above seasonal normals" by Tuesday evening and through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The warmth will be accompanied by rain.

But the very early taste of spring won't last. A cold front is heading east from the Great Lakes region and will bring temperatures in the city back down to the 40s and 30s Thursday, meteorologists predicted.

The average temperature for this time of year is about 40 degrees, according to Accuweather.

Wednesday's heat bump is still cooler than the 2006 record-high for the day of 64 degrees.

Many New Yorkers took to social media Tuesday to comment on the confusing weather.

"NYC weather confuses the hell out of me," tweeted Leandro Nunez about 9:45 a.m. "Why's it so nice out!?"

"Okay yesterday it was snowing and today I don't need a hat or gloves," tweeted Melissa Villodas. "What is going on?!"
