UPPER MANHATTAN — Word Up Community Bookshop reached its funding goal on New Year's Day, marking another step toward the reopening of the beloved bookstore.

Word Up launched an IndieGoGo fundraising campaign in November in an attempt to raise $60,000 to pay for a new location. The campaign was eventually extended an extra nine days, and on Tuesday, the last day of the campaign, Word Up reached its funding mark.

"You did it! $60,000 reached! Thank you thank you thank you," Word Up tweeted shortly after reaching the goal Tuesday afternoon.

The bookseller was forced to move out of its West 176th Street location in August after it lost its lease. Volunteers at the shop have stated that they plan to find an affordable space Uptown, located anywhere between 165th and 190th streets.
