STATEN ISLAND — A four-car crash on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Monday afternoon left nine people hurt, including one in critical condition, a spokesman for the MTA said.

The crash happened just before 2 p.m. on the upper level of the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge, officials said.

Emergency workers had to pull one person from the wreckage, officials said.

The victims were rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North and Richmond University Medical Center, officials said. Five of the victims had serious injuries and three had minor injuries, officials said.

The crash initially knocked out two lanes of traffic on the bridge, but they were reopened about an hour and a half later, the MTA said.
