MIDTOWN — The annual lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is expected to cause major gridlock in the city Wednesday night.

Several streets are expected to be shut down from 7 to 9 p.m. because of the holiday ceremony.

The closures, according to the Department of Transportation, include:

â–º Fifth Avenue between 48th and 52nd streets

â–º Sixth Avenue between 48th and 52nd streets

â–º 48th, 49th, 50th, 51st and 52nd streets between Fifth and Sixth avenues

The 10-ton, 80-foot-long, 50-foot-wide Norway Spruce is decked out with 30,000 multi-colored LED lights and topped with a 9.5-foot-wide Swarovski crystal star.
