BRONX — A 16-year-old girl was shot and critically injured in Hunts Point Sunday night, police said.
The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. when the victim was near Bryant and Garrison avenues, the NYPD said.
She was struck one time in the chest, police said.
"She fell on the floor. She had her arms across her chest," said Roman Santos, 39, a parking lot attendant who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting. "I heard her say, 'Call the cops! Call the cops!'"
The girl was rushed to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in critical but stable condition, cops said.
Friends said the victim, who they said is a basketball player and a student at Mott Haven Campus in the Bronx, aspires to play professionally in the WNBA.
"We're practically family," said Vincent Perez, a 16-year-old boy who said he was a longtime friend of the victim. "She didn't deserve something like this.
"It's shouldn't happen to a girl," he added. "It's stupid stuff."
No one had been arrested by Monday morning.
The shooting is the latest in a string of shootings involving children in the city.
Among the most unsettling was a shooting that killed a 4-year-old Bronx boy, Lloyd Morgan, in a Bronx playground.
