Mother and Baby Girl Killed in Burning Bronx Apartment

KINGSBRIDGE — A woman was found stabbed to death under a burning mattress inside her Kingsbridge apartment Thursday night, police said.

Her 1-month-old baby died at Montefiore Medical Center, officials said.

"The baby was...naked, and just had this blank expression," said Kenneth Delgado, who saw a frantic firefighter carrying the infant. "She didn't look like she was breathing."

The woman, who was in her early 30s, was found dead on her bed inside her 3034 Albany Crescent apartment, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

She suffered blunt force trauma to her head and was cut badly, fire officials at the scene said. A mattress had been thrown on top of her and set ablaze.

"It's horrendous," said another neighbor who asked not to be identified.

No one has been arrested, police said Friday.

The woman's identity will not be released until cops can notify her relatives. Autopsies were set to be conducted Friday morning, a spokeswoman for the city Medical Examiner's office said.

The building's superintendent, Freddy Rodan, said the woman, who lived in a fourth-floor unit, kept to herself.

"She's a quiet woman," he said. "Never had no problems from her."
