Cops Hunt Armed Car Thief Who Allegedly Tried to Run Them Over in Queens

QUEENS — The NYPD is hunting a brazen car thief who allegedly pulled a gun on cops and tried to run them over in Queens Tuesday night.

Cops chased the car thief as he drove off just after 8 p.m. in an SUV stolen from a Chevy repair shop, police said.

When cops tracked down the SUV, the suspect drew a weapon and tried to run them over, police said.

The driver fled on foot, and cops fired several shots. Police said no one was struck.

The thief, whose identity was unknown, was still missing as of Wednesday morning, police said.

The drama began Tuesday night when the man convinced staff at a Chevy repair shop at 61-10 Metropolitan Ave. in Ridgewood to give him the keys to the SUV, under the guise that it was his vehicle, police said. Once the workers at the shop realized they had been duped, they called police and used OnStar security hardware to locate the vehicle.

Officers pursued the SUV and tracked it down just off the Long Island Expressway.
