Brooklyn Design Studio Releases Carroll Gardens Themed Halloween Calendar

CARROLL GARDENS — It’s time to start the count down to Halloween, and a local design studio is offering a stylish way to do it.

Just a month before the spooky season, Orange You Glad design studio, located at 423 Smith St., released its second annual Halloween Advent Calendar, complete with haunted scenes from an imaginary dinner party in a Carroll Gardens brownstone.

The calendar was originally a promotional project meant for friends, but it's slowly becoming a Halloween tradition, at least in the neighborhood.

“We’ve always considered Halloween the end of the year for us,” said Tammy Duncan, co-owner of Orange You Glad. “We’ve always celebrated by doing some sort of in-house promotional piece to send to our clients and friends.

“One day, we were at the Court Street Grocery and said hey, do you want to try selling some of these? They weren’t originally intended for resale.”

When the studio realized that the calendars were selling, they decided to make it an annual promotional piece, though they’re not sure how long they’ll be able to afford it.

“It’s costly to produce and we’re not doing it to make any money,” Duncan explained.

This year, the theme of the calendar, called Mystery at 423, is a spooky dinner party in a haunted brownstone.

“It’s part Carroll Gardens brownstone, part Queen-Anne style and part Scooby doo,” said Duncan.

Inside the calendar — or in this case, the house — a dinner party is in full swing. There’s a spooky scene dedicated to every day in October and the scenes are revealed by opening the flaps for each day.

The calendars are priced at $13.95, and are sold at the Court Street Grocery, located at 485 Court St., or online. Animated scenes from the calendar are revealed on the studio’s blog every day.

“The project allows us to use some of our in-house illustration skills and share with everyone we love,” said Duncan, who is one of a five-person creative team at the studio.
