Bushwig Festival Draws Dozens of Glam Drag Performers to Brooklyn

By DNAinfo Staff on October 1, 2012 12:33pm

BROOKLYN — The streets of Bushwick turned glam over the weekend for Bushwig, the neighborhood's first-ever festival celebrating drag culture and performance.

The Saturday event, held at the Secret Project Robot arts space on Melrose Street, saw dozens of drag queens dressed to the nines put on a variety of acts for the few hundred guests in attendance.

The all-day outdoor festival was conceived by Matthew Mendoza (aka Matty Horrorchata) and Simon Leahy (aka Babes Trust), the latter of whom founded London's "Tranny Olympics" fest six years ago.

The two took inspiration from the East Village's Wigstock festival in creating the event, a response to the burgeoning drag scene in Brooklyn and the specifically art-friendly environs of Bushwick.
