Man Shot and Critically Injured in Independence Houses in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — A 33-year-old man was shot and critically injured at the Independence Houses early Monday, police said.

The victim was shot repeatedly in the body at 125 Taylor St., near Bedford Avenue, just after midnight, authorities said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, the FDNY said. Police said he was in critical condition.

No one has been arrested.

Tony Herbert, a Brooklyn community activist, called on elected officials to do more to stop a rash of gun violence in the city.

"This has to stop," Herbert said at the scene. "Our police officers are in jeopardy with these weapons on the streets and so are regular people who walk in our communities. Our mothers, our children, our grandparents."
