Bike Rack Proposed to Replace Parking Spot on Burgeoning Bushwick Corner

By Meredith Hoffman | September 24, 2012 8:01am

BUSHWICK — A budding strip of organic groceries, coffee and cocktails may soon be getting yet another amenity: more bike parking.

The Wyckoff Starr cafe and the Department of Transportation are working to replace one car parking spot on the corner of Wyckoff Avenue and Starr Street with a bicycle rack, both parties told DNAinfo.com.

The rack, like ones already installed on Williamsburg's Wythe Avenue and in a few other city locales, would be on the corner in front of the new bar Mazelle, the Wyckoff Starr's owner Scott McGibney said.

"I am looking forward to getting it in place as my small bike rack is chock full most of the time," said McGibney of the one rack already outside his shop. McGibney noted that more busineses "are opening seemingly daily" right around his cafe, and said that it would help them all accommodate the volume of bikers.

"It will great to not have folks shackle their bikes to trees and signs which can be troublesome to car doors and of course the trees themselves," he said.

The proposal will be presented at the Bushwick Community Board Four meeting next month, McGibney said.
