NEW YORK CITY – Straphangers are in for delays Friday afternoon on the J and M trains after a smoke condition inside the tunnel between the Essex Street and Bowery stations, MTA officials said.

The smoke problems began shortly before 3 p.m. inside the tunnel, and the passengers on the trains were discharged, MTA officials said.

J train service was suspended in both directions between Marcy Avenue and Chambers Street and M train service was suspended between Essex and Marcy Avenue, officials said.
