Mayor Bloomberg Drops in on Hot Long Island City Restaurant

LONG ISLAND CITY — The Hunters Point culinary scene keeps growing and this week Mayor Michael Bloomberg decided to check what the buzz is all about.

On Wednesday evening — the same night he helped light the giant JetBlue sign atop the airline's new headquarters — he dined with his girlfriend Diana Taylor at Alobar, a restaurant on Vernon Boulevard which will soon host a tomato festival.

"His body guards came first and scoped us out and then he came in 15 minutes later," said Jeff Blath, owner of Alobar. Then, the mayor and his girlfriend "sat in a quiet booth.”

Taylor had the beet salad and the salmon and Hizzoner ate the maple bacon popcorn and the bacon-wrapped meatloaf.

Both had some white wine and didn't want dessert, according to Blath.

“They were very nice, they joked around with the customers at the bar a little on the way out," he said.
