Brooklyn Mom Shot to Death While Picking Up Groceries

FLATBUSH — A routine trip to the grocery store turned deadly for a 28-year-old mother when she was gunned down in a shooting that left three others wounded, relatives said Friday.

Fatima Gordon was returning from grocery shopping with her mother, her 4-year-old son, her 7-year-old brother and friends on Clarkson Avenue Thursday night when shots rang out just after 9 p.m., police and family said.

Gordon, who was going to turn 29 Tuesday, was shot in the back, police said.

“We were just walking. I heard a big boom and I saw my baby on the ground,” said Cynthia Thomas, Gordon’s mother.

“I saw the bullet hole in her back," she said. "Her legs were twisted under the car.”

Gordon was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she died, police said.

Three other people — including 13-year-old Aaron Munoz, a friend of Gordon's family — were shot as well, police said.

Munoz, who was on a skateboard, suffered a graze wound to the back and was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition, officials said.

"We heard the gun shots and I ran," Munoz said from his home Friday. "Once I got inside the building [40 Clarkson Ave.] I felt my back and when I pulled my hand back there was blood."

A bullet also grazed a 29-year-old man in the torso, and a 26-year-old man was shot in the arm and buttocks, officials said. They were taken to the same hospital by private means, police said, and their conditions were not immediately known.

No one had been arrested by Friday afternoon, but police circulated a flier saying they were looking for a man who had pulled up on a bicycle and opened fire on the group, killing Gordon.

Police are offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.

Relatives described Gordon as a dedicated mother who doted on her 4-year-old son, Chamani.

"She was really the backbone of her family," said Denise Johnson, Gordon's aunt, who added that Gordon had a sister and four brothers, the youngest of whom is 7 years old. "She always helped with all the kids."

Gordon rarely went out because Chamani suffered from diabetes, Thomas said.

“This was the only night we went out," Thomas said.
