Man Takes Deadly Leap off Verrazano Narrows Bridge

STATEN ISLAND — A 54-year-old man leaped to his death this morning from the upper level of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, police said.

Police received a call at 8 a.m. reporting that a man had jumped from the Verrazano Narrows, and landed in the water.

Rescuers pulled the man from the water and transported him to land.

The victim was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The man died at the hospital at 9:25 a.m., according to police. Family had not yet been notified, and the man's identity was not immediately released, police said.
