TOTTENVILLE —  A man crashed his brand new car into two trees and a no parking sign on a Tottenville street Monday morning while swerving to avoid another car, his father said.

Alex Taranto, 23, had saved up for three years to buy his now-totaled black Dodge Charger. It was only 15 days old — so new the registration hadn't even arrived yet — said his father, Brian Taranto, 58, a Tottenville resident who was at the scene of the accident at Arthur Kill and Lee avenues shortly after it happened.

Taranto said his son was driving on Arthur Kill toward Lee Avenue when another car pulled out of a small road and allegedly cut in front, forcing his son to swerve.

The accident happened about 10:30 a.m., according to fire officials.

Alex Taranto went to a nearby hospital for pain in his right arm and wrist, but his father said he didn't seem too hurt.

"He was more upset about the car," Brian Taranto said.

Police told Brian Taranto they were not charging the other driver with any wrongdoing since the two cars did not collide, he said.
