BRONX — Crisis counselors were at a Bronx junior high school Monday talking to students who lost a popular teacher in a hit-and-run accident in Soundview over the weekend, Department of Education officials said.

Dawn Affoumani, 42, started as a substitute teacher in the city school system in 1998 before being appointed a full-time social studies teacher and eventually landing a job at IS 375, the Bronx Mathematics Preparatory School, DOE officials said.

Affoumani was the mother of two young boys, neighbors said. She was just blocks from her home, crossing the intersection of White Plains Road and Story Avenue when she was hit by a tan Mazda, according to police.

Affoumani was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver took off, and no arrests have been made, police said.

"She was a very nice woman, always saying 'hi' and 'bye,'" her neighbor Martinez Cruz, 79, said. "I feel very sorry for her family. It's a shame."

Another neighbor, Rosalind Best, 60, was also shocked by the incident.

"She was such a nice lady," Best said. "I was so surprised. My heart went out to her."
