STATEN ISLAND — A woman was critically injured and her cat killed after fire broke out at an apartment in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The blaze began on the second floor of 68 Eldridge Ave. about 12:50 p.m., FDNY officials said.

The victim was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital in cardiac arrest, fire officials said at the scene. Her cat also perished in the blaze, officials added.

Two firefighters were taken to St. Vincent's Hospital with minor injuries, the FDNY said.

She had just moved into the building on Feb. 1, officials at the scene said.

The fire started on a couch on the first floor of the building, sending smoke to the upstairs bedroom where the woman was at the time, fire officials said at the scene.

Firefighters had not yet determined if a smoke detector was installed in the apartment.
