MANHATTAN — New York’s reputation for having a higher population of female than male residents isn’t only exciting for Big Apple bachelors, a new survey shows.

Gotham is one of the top lesbian-friendly cities in the nation, landing at the No. 2 spot in a survey conducted by the lesbian-focused website Autostraddle, Gothamist reported.

Culling data from its readers and using LGBT-related rankings like culture and politics, the website tabbed New York as a “prime location” for lesbians — edged out only by Northampton/Amherst, Mass., on its list of 21 cities.

“NYU, The New School, Barnard and Columbia are chock-full of lesbians, as is nearby Sarah Lawrence. There are resources/activity groups for everyone of every sexual proclivity, gender identity, political passion and yoga style preference,” the site said, also noting the state’s newly adopted gay marriage law.

“Although Manhattan's West Village and Chelsea neighborhoods have become largely male-centric spaces, lesbians have made gayborhoods of their own in areas like Park Slope, Red Hook, East Harlem and West Harlem.”

Los Angeles’ West Hollywood neighborhood came in at No. 3 on the list, while San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley, Calif. and Cambridge/Boston/Somerville, Mass., rounded out the top five.

Northampton/Amherst took the top spot for having more lesbians per capita than any other city and for the amount of same-sex couples per thousand households.
