MANHATTAN —Tom Hanks' controversial 9/11 movie "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was nominated for an Oscar in the best picture category Tuesday.

Actor Max von Sydow received a nomination for best supporting actor for his role as the mute renter in the film.

The movie, based on the book of the same name by Brooklyn author Jonathan Safran Foer, has been controversial because of its painfully raw emotion, which some say comes too soon after the 2001 terror attacks.

It tells the story of a young boy coming to terms with his father's death in the Twin Towers.

Critics feared the intense images of the attacks could spark flashbacks for survivors, but the movie has won praise from first responders.

Brooklyn-based actress Michelle Williams also was nominated for an Academy Award in the best actress category for her role as Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn," while famous Manhattanite Woody Allen has a shot at winning a directing Oscar for his movie "Midnight in Paris."

Allen's "Midnight in Paris" was also nominated for best picture.
