Two Taxis Collide on 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue

By Patrick Hedlund | January 13, 2012 7:39pm

MIDTOWN — A pair of yellow cabs were involved in a smashup at the busy intersection of West 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue late Friday afternoon, witnesses said.

One of the taxis was traveling down Seventh Avenue when another turning south onto the road from West 53rd Street collided with the cab, a witness explained.

"It was a boom — big sound. Both were speeding,” said Mustafa Abdalhamid, 50, who’s worked at a food cart at the corner for the past four years. “Once they hit together there was some glass on the street."

He said one of the drivers was taken away in an ambulance.

A passenger in one of the taxis also said he struck his head during the crash.

"I hit my head,” said David Rodriguez, 28. “I can't feel my face."

It was not immediately clear if there was any criminality involved in the incident, but Abdalhamid said the cabbie driving down Seventh Avenue gunned it to beat the changing stoplight.

"Nobody was in the way. Thank God nobody got hurt,” he said. “If someone was in the way, it's going to be a problem."
