Uptown Familes to Kick Off Halloween with Costume Ball

By Carla Zanoni | October 28, 2011 3:43pm

INWOOD — Uptown families are getting a head start on Halloween this year as they prepare to celebrate at the annual Mad Hatter’s Costume Ball Saturday.

Families from near and far will descend on the spooktacular event held at the Muscota New School (P.S. 314) for a costume ball featuring DJ music and dancing, games, face painting, a photo station, kid’s nail salon, hula hoop zone, and a maze constructed of cardboard.

The event is open to all families from the community.

Homemade treats will be available for purchase.

Students at the K-5 public school already kicked off the holiday on Tuesday as they marched along Broadway to Dyckman Street and back during the Mad Hatter’s Day Parade while wearing hats inspired by class lessons, including literary and historical figures.

Principal Camille Wallin was the master of ceremonies as the Mad Hatter during the parade named after the Alice in Wonderland character.

“It’s great fun and a wonderful way to engage the children each year,” she said after the parade.

The Muscota Parent's Association organizes the ball each year to help raise funds for arts-focused experiential programming at the school, such as class trips to museums and visiting artists at the school.

The Mad Hatter’s Costume Ball takes place at the Muscota New School, P.S. 314, located at 4862 Broadway, between Academy and 204th streets.

Admission is $10 per family. Game tickets are $1 a game or $12 for an unlimited wristband.
