CHELSEA — A fire broke out in a Chelsea basement on West 16th Street Monday, sending heavy smoke billowing out onto the street.
The FDNY said 60 firefighters were called to battle the blaze, which broke out at 246 W. 16th St. at 9:14 a.m.
It was extinguished by 10:08 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said. There were no reported injuries.
"There was smoke coming out of the basement doors," said Brody Wilson, a tourist from Colorado who was eating at the Grey Dog restaurant next door.
"There were two fire fighters on the roof, they used a saw to cut open the bottom doors."
Fire chief John Buckhit said the fire started in an oil burner. He said damage to the office was contained.
A chiropractor's office is located inside the basement, but it was unclear if the blaze started in the office.
