KIPS BAY — NYU Langone Medical Center has received $50 million to finance a new 16,000-square-foot pediatric hospital.

The gift comes from the Hassenfeld family, longtime trustees of NYU Medical Center and owners of Hasbro, the world’s second-largest toy company. It was announced at an event Sunday at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg and television personality Barbara Walters joined more than 1,000 children, parents and grandparents.

"We've made enormous strides over the last 10 years in improving comprehensive health services that will help more of our children enjoy successful, fulfilling lives," Bloomberg said in a statement. "With the generous help of the Hassenfeld family, NYU Langone Medical Center will create a state-of-the-art pediatric facility that makes a difference in the lives of those we care about most."

The new facility, to be named the Hassenfeld Pediatric Center, will be located on the medical center’s East Side campus on First Avenue in the 30s, and will be the only pediatric inpatient facility in Manhattan to have all private rooms, according to a press statement.

The center will provide acute and critical care to its young patients when it opens in 2017.

"This is a momentous occasion for our medical center and New York's children," said Dr. Robert I. Grossman, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center. "[This] extraordinary gift to create the Hassenfeld Pediatric Center begins a new era of children's health care in New York and helps ensure bright futures for countless children, our most precious patients, and their families."
