MANHATTAN — A worker plunged 40 feet from a lower Manhattan high-rise Thursday afternoon, landing in a shaft between two buildings across from City Hall, fire officials said.

The worker, who was in his 40s, fell from scaffolding that was rigged over a shaftway between 253 Broadway and 97 Murray St., around 2:20 p.m.

He then fell four stories to the bottom of the shaft.

Firefighters had to pull him out on a backboard, according to Battallion Chief Tom Currao.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition, Currao said.
