KIPS BAY — After a massive patient evacuation at NYU Langone Medical Center and the Manhattan VA hospital, patients have yet to be returned to the medical corridor along First Avenue.

Roughly 400 patients were removed from Tisch Hospital and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center. Those able to be discharged were sent home. Those who could not be discharged were transported to hospitals outside the flood zone.

A spokeswoman for NYU Medical Center, located near First Avenue and East 33rd Street, said officials were assessing whether the hospital sustained any damage in the storm before they decided to officially reopen and return patients to the facility.

A deep puddle formed in front of NYU Langone Medical Center's Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011. The flooding was much better than officials expected when they issued a mandatory evacuation of the hospital on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.

Officials at the Manhattan VA hospital did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but an operator reached on Sunday afternoon said that the hospital remained closed and directed any phone calls to another VA facility in Brooklyn.

In addition to the evacuations, NYU Medical Center also shut down its emergency room on Friday. A sign posted on the ER entrance redirected patients in need of urgent medical care to Bellevue Hospital Center.

On Sunday afternoon, the entrance to the ER remained blocked by a stack of sandbags.

The entrance to NYU Langone Medical Center was relatively empty on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, after Hurricane Irene forced the hospital to close. The safety of the hospital had to be assessed before patients would be allowed to return.
