Jet Ski Riders Rescued From Hudson River in Inwood

By Carla Zanoni | August 24, 2011 8:28am

INWOOD — A man and woman riding on a jet ski near Inwood Hill Park were rescued Monday night after their watercraft was stuck in shallow water in the Harlem River during low tide.

A large crowd of approximately 300 people flocked to the waterfront after hearing a low-flying helicopter and several emergency vehicles inside the park just after 7:30 p.m.

The helicopter hovered over the pair as they sat on their jet ski as an emergency worker crawled on his knees in mud to the edge of the mud where the watercraft was stuck, witnesses said.

“Ultimately, all they had to do was cast a rope from the boat and tug the jet ski back out, about 15 feet,” said Inwood resident Todd Cerveris, who had walked to the park after hearing the helicopter and seeing emergency vehicles filing into the park. “The crowd applauded, everyone went home.”

Police and fire officials could not immediately confirm details about the incident.

Residents tweeted minute-to-minute as they watched the commotion unfold in the park.

“Amazing rescue @nypd in the Hudson River near #Inwood Park,” wrote @kamasghar. “Note to self, don't jet ski here.”
