UPPER WEST SIDE—Tennis mania took over Central Park on Monday morning with more than 75 beginner-level players, ages 8 to 16, competing in the finals of the Novice Tennis Tournament, organized by City Parks Foundation.

Sixteen teams from the five boroughs played in the tournament, a foundation spokesman said.

“We hope to promote physical fitness and build self-confidence for the kids,” the spokesman said.

The youngsters, selected from a pool of 300 participants, learned to play tennis this summer in 38 parks across the city through free lessons with CityParks Tennis.

The program, funded by Chase, provided free tennis lessons to more than 7,000 children, ages 5 to 16, this summer.
