Inwood Residents to Meet With 34th Precinct Police about 'Alcohol Alley'

By DNAinfo Staff on August 5, 2011 1:22pm

MANHATTAN — Aggrieved neighbors of Inwood's so-called "Alcohol Alley" and Assemblyman Denny Farrell will meet with police Friday night to address conditions on the bar-heavy stretch of Dyckman Street, Farrell's special assistant Frank Hess confirmed.

Locals have complained for years that an influx of bars and restaurants brought with it noisy traffic, raucous crowds spilling out onto sidewalks, and even drag races.

Farell joined more than a dozen community members for a walk down "Alcohol Alley" on July 22. The walk gave Farell a firsthand look at motorcycles parked on sidewalks and "what appeared to be illegal gambling," according to a blog post on the assemblyman's website.

The group will share its observations at Friday's meeting with Deputy Inspector Jose Navarro, commanding officer of the 34th Precinct, and brainstorm possible solutions, Hess said.

"Among the ideas being considered to calm the noise is eliminating parking for cars and motorcycles during certain hours, closing the street to traffic altogether, or both," the blog post, dated July 26, explained.

A previous meeting of residents and owners from the controversial businesses, including Dyckman Bar, Papasito, Corcho, Il Sole, MamaSushi and Mamajuana, took place on July 13.

Friday's meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Friday inside the Isabella Geriatric Center, located at 515 Audubon Avenue. All are welcome.
