MIDTOWN — A fire broke out at a Midtown building Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.
The fire started on the first floor of 241 West 54th Street, near Eighth Avenue, just before 2 p.m., the FDNY said.
"It kept getting worse and worse," described Isabelle Izoldi, 14, of of the Upper West Side. Izoldi was walking past the building around the time the smoke started pouring out of the building.
"They called everyone to come out," Izoldi said.
Men on the roof came down as well during the evacuation, said Grace Moran, 14, of Connecticut. Izoldi and Moran are in town for ballet camp this summer.
Multiple bystanders said that the workers left the building shortly after the smoke became visible.
Roughly 60 firefighters responded to the fire, the fire department said.
Battalion Chief Jack Joyce told DNAinfo at the scene that it was small fire on the first fire, and that it had been put out inside of 20 minutes.
