MIDTOWN — A Midtown office building was evacuated Monday morning after an electrical transformer began to give off smoke.

Workers at 1359 Broadway, at West 36th Street, were sent into the street after the FDNY evacuated the building when the power dipped because of the smoke condition, fire officials said.

Roughly 1,500 people work in the building, the New York Post reported.

The smoke condition in a below-ground vault started at roughly 9:20 a.m., fire officials said. The transformer was not actually on fire, the FDNY said. Con Ed officials shut the transformer down anyway as a precaution, cutting power to the building, the utility said.
