MANHATTAN — The Knicks picked Georgia Tech guard Iman Shumpert in the 2011 NBA Draft held Thursday night in Newark.

New York had the 17th pick in the draft and chose Shumpert, a point guard known as a quality defender.

"Welcome to New York, Iman Shumpert!" the team tweeted after the pick was made.

Knicks fans in the crowd were shocked by the pick of Shumpert, who wasn't in attendance at the draft. Carmelo Anthony, who had been tweeting leading up to the pick, immediately signed off after it was made.

"Goodnight. I'm out," he tweeted.

The team's other superstar, Amar'e Stoudemire, sounded more upbeat.

"Gr8 Pick. Welcome to the team Iman Shumpert," Stoudemire tweeted. "Can't wait to get started to become a better Defensive team."
