MANHATTAN — The Metropolitan Museum of Art will take over the Whitney Museum's Upper East Side space when the Whitney opens a new location in the Meatpacking District, the New York Times reported.

The deal allows the Whitney to preserve its landmark Breuer building while allowing the Met to have room enough to show off its contemporary and modern art collection, the paper said.

The Whitney had been looking to unload its property on East 75th Street and Madison Avenue because it couldn't afford to maintain that space and the new one on Gansevoort Street. Groundbreaking on the new space, projected to cost $720 million, is expected within weeks.

The Met would move into the Whitney space in 2015, the Times reported. Under the deal, the Met would stay there for at least eight years, the Times reported.
