Duane Reade May Still Face Fines After Removing UWS Sign

UPPER WEST SIDE — Duane Reade could still be fined for a video billboard it was forced to remove after complaints from angry Upper West Siders.

The pharmacy said on Friday it will take down the flashing sign from the second floor of the new Duane Reade store at West 72nd and Broadway, in response to mounting local criticism.

The company said it will move the sign to a more appropriate location, perhaps in Times Square, and agreed to make a donation to an Upper West Side community group as a good will gesture.

But Duane Reade still has to answer to the Department of Buildings, which slapped the company with eight violations for placing illuminated signs on the second floor, a DOB spokeswoman said.

Those violations could carry fines of up to $6,400.

An administrative law judge will decide at a June 2 hearing before the city's Environmental Control Board whether those fines will be assessed, a DOB spokeswoman said.

The DOB violations are considered pending until the June 2 hearing, when Duane Reade representatives will get a chance to plead their case before the Environmental Control Board.
