UPPER WEST SIDE — It's time for spring cleaning, and a Saturday electronics recycling event at P.S. 87 is just what the housekeeping doctor ordered.

Bring your old electronics, as well as clothing, to the free event, which runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at P.S. 87's playground on West 77th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

The recycling extravaganza is hosted by City Councilwoman Gale Brewer, the Upper West Side Recycling Center and Sims Recycling Solutions.

Accepted items include: working and non-working computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, cables, TVs, stereo equipment, VCRs, DVD players, cable receivers, faxes, scanners, video games, cell phones, batteries and textiles such as clothing and shoes.

Don't bring: appliances, microwave ovens, toasters, air conditioners, wall phones, or carpeting.

Electronics contain toxic components such as lead, mercury and cadmium, so it's important to dispose of them properly. All collected computers and electronics will go to an EPA-licensed recycler, Brewer's office said.

The event is meant to raise public awareness about a new state law that requires manufacturers to establish "convenient systems" for recycling electronic waste by April 2011, according to a statement from Brewer's office.

"The New York City Council passed similar legislation in 2009, but it has been held up in court," said Brewer in a statement. "I am delighted that the state passed this important law, and that manufacturers have agreed to collaborate with community based organizations."

For more information contact Brewer's office at (212) 873-0282 or Upper West Side Recycling at jtwine@synerjy.org.
