LOWER MANHATTAN — An 87-year-old man visiting from Australia had his wallet stolen last week, police said.

The man was in the Staples store at 217 Broadway about 10 a.m. March 15 when he noticed the wallet was missing, police said. When he called to cancel his credit cards, he discovered over $2,800 in fraudulent charges.

The man also lost $125 in cash and a $29 MetroCard, police said.

Also last week, a woman riding the 4 train downtown discovered her wallet had been stolen, police said.

The 57-year-old victim, a Bronx resident, was changing from the southbound 6 train to the southbound 4 train at Grand Central about 4 p.m. March 14 when she discovered her bag was open and her wallet was gone, police said.

The last time she had seen the wallet was at a doctor's office on the Upper East Side, and then she boarded the 6 train at the 77th Street station, police said.

The woman lost $105 cash, credit and debit cards, a Brooks Brothers credit card and an Ann Taylor credit card, police said.
