MIDTOWN — An investigation into a suspicious package temporarily closed part of 47th street Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Police said a backpack sitting on top of a large blue, construction dumpster caused the shutdown on West 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

Witnesses said the streets were first closed shortly after 1 p.m.

"I saw it. It was just a backpack tossed over a garbage canister," said Will, a 35-year-old diamond district worker who would not give his last name. "They told us to stay in the building or walk to the corner."

Hords of workers, most from nearby jewelery shops, crowded both ends of the block while they waited to be let back in.

The bomb squad was brought in to examine the backpack, which ended up being filled with packing foam, police said.

Police sounded the all clear and reopened the street at 2:15 p.m.

Police taped off 46th street between Fifth and Sixth avenues to investigate a suspicious package.
