CENTRAL PARK SOUTH — A fire broke out in a 40th floor apartment at the posh Essex House Monday afternoon, the FDNY said.

About 60 firefighters arrived at 160 Central Park South after getting a report of a fire about 2:36 p.m. The fire was in the kitchen of an apartment on the 40th floor of the building, FDNY said. One woman was home, but nobody was injured. She was brought to Roosevelt Hospital as a precautionary measure.

"She wants to change her clothes and get on with her appointments," a firefighter at the scene said of the apartment's resident, who was not named.

The apartment's sprinkler system almost put the fire out on its own, according to FDNY at the scene. The fire was completely under control by 3 p.m., FDNY said.

A resident of the seventh floor said that she hadn't realized anything was wrong until she brought her dog out for a walk and saw all the firefighters in the lobby.

"They're very posh and they're duplexes," the woman said of the apartments on the 40th floor.

FDNY said the cause of the fire was under investigation, but it appeared to be related to the stove.
