MANHATTAN —Commuters will have a slightly easier time on their way to work Thursday as the icy sleet gave way to clear skies, but some streets remained slick as leftover black ice coated the pavement, forecasters warned.

The National Weather Service warned residents that icy roads and sidewalks would be hazardous during the morning commute.

Forecasters said that untreated black ice left over from Wednesday's freezing rain would cause dangerous conditions on roads around Manhattan.

City schools stayed open Thursday. Temperatures are expected to reach 30 degrees Thursday.

But the dry weather won't last long, as snow returns Friday night and is expected to continue all day on Saturday, forecasters said.

Alternate side parking rules were suspended Thursday — not for the weather, but for the Chinese Lunar New Year, the city said.
