MANHATTAN — The work week got off to a frigid start Monday as Manhattan plunged into a deep freeze.

The thermometer read just 6 degrees during the morning commute on Monday.

"I'm wearing four layers and I'm still cold," said Marcello Garcia, 65, a business developer in Midtown.

The National Weather Service issued a severe weather advisory in effect until 9 a.m. Monday morning, warning the single-digit temperatures could cause frostbite and hypothermia for people not properly braced against the cold.

Forecasters warned that residents should venture outside only if absolutely necessary.

"My fingers are frozen, my toes are frozen," said Marie T., who works in a Midtown restaurant, as she stopped at a coffee cart on 53rd. Street.

New Yorkers needed to bundle up on Monday for below freezing temperatures.

"I have lots of layers on, but I just crossed the street from the hotel to here and my nose is already red."

The warning was little consolation to New Yorkers who had to work outside all day.

"It's very, very cold," said N. Ali, 66, who works at a newsstand on Broadway.

"This is only keeping my hands warm," he said of the small heater he had running to try to fight the brutal temperatures.

Alternate side parking was suspended Monday though drivers would still have to feed the meters.

The painfully cold temperatures would linger throughout the day Monday with a high of just 17 degrees, according to AccuWeather.

The rest of the week was expected to warm up into the 30s with snow expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Good news for New Yorkers not enjoying the frigid cold.

"I'm wearing a couple of pairs of long johns, three pairs of socks and construction boots, and I already feel it," Marie T. said.
