MANHATTAN — Less than a week after city straphangers had to fork over more money to ride subways and buses, drivers now have to feed more money into Muni parking meters.
Muni-Meter rates will increase from $2.50 to $3 an hour south of 86th Street and from 25 cents for 20 minutes to 25 cents for 15 minutes throughout the rest of Manhattan, according to a spokesman from the Department of Transportation.
Meters in Manhattan and Queens will be changed first. By June, the city expects to have the meters in all of the boroughs except for south of 86th Street in Manhattan changed, a DOT spokesman said Monday.
On Thursday, commuters who drive into the city were hit with another hike when the cash tolls on the Robert F. Kennedy-Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges and the Queens Midtown Tunnel jumped to $6.50 from $5.50. For E-ZPass customers, the rise went to $4.80 from $4.57.
Straphangers who purchase cards before the cut-off date are given a grace period to activate the cards before the 17 percent 30-day unlimited fare hike goes into effect. To get full use of an unlimited card purchased before Dec. 30, it must be swiped by Jan. 10.
