Upper Manhattan Makes Best of 'Snow Day' By Shoveling and Sledding

UPPER MANHATTAN — inwood and Washington Heights residents spent most of the day Monday shoveling and sledding after a blizzard dumped 20 inches of snow on Manhattan.

Tire tracks on side streets in Inwood told the tale of cars that failed to make it out of their parknig spots, and children walked chest deep in snow while making their way to the hills of Fort Tryon and Inwood Hill parks to sled throughout the afternoon.

Many said they already had the day off from work, because of the holidays, but others took the snowfall as an opportunity to earn some cash.

A trio of snow shovelers walked along Sherman Avenue in Inwood, offering to shovel out buried cars and snow-clogged sidewalks. One of the men, a native of the Dominican Republic who said he has only lived here for two months, was shocked to see so much snow.

"I have never seen snow anywhere. I hope it gets better," he said in Spanish, declining to give his name.

For others, the blizzard offered an opportunity to see Upper Manhattan in a new light, as photographers took to the streets documenting the winter wonderland.

"Today's photo mission is to hike from #Inwood to the Central Park Great Lawn," tweeted @JReznickPhoto, a Washington Heights-based photographer, before proceeding to post a bevy of gorgeous photos detailing his uptown tour under the Twitter hashtag #Snowpocalypse.
